THE FRONT ROW CHALLENGE - OSKY’S PRE-KNOXVILLE TRADITION

Before Knoxville Nationals week officially explodes, sprint car fans enjoy one of dirt racing’s most unique traditions — the Front Row Challenge.

Created in 1996 by Terry and Lori McCarl, the concept was simple: the pole-sitter could give up the front spot, drop to the rear, and race for a monster payday.

In 1999, “The Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild accepted the challenge and charged from the back to win $50,000, forever cementing the event in sprint car history.

Since then, the winners list has become a who’s-who of the sport, including Sammy Swindell, Daryn Pittman, Lance Dewease, Brian Brown, Brad Sweet and Kyle Larson. Larson has become the modern master, with five Front Row Challenge victories.

And behind it all are the McCarls.

Terry, a National Sprint Car Hall of Famer and longtime Iowa sprint car star, and Lori, the driving force behind much of the event’s promotional and business operation, turned an idea into a Monday-night tradition that kicks off the biggest week in sprint car racing.
