Tongue in Cheek Response - Raise Hell, Praise Dale
Raise Hell. Praise Dale. Always.
There’s a special kind of tone-deaf bureaucracy that only a government-issued badge can produce. Greensboro Police decided to lecture the internet about “appropriate responses” after someone had the audacity to answer a speeding question with the sacred four words every real racing fan knows by heart: Raise Hell. Praise Dale.
Apparently that phrase is “not appropriate.”
Dale Jr. himself stepped in with the exact energy the moment deserved: a little humor, a little grace, and the quiet suggestion that maybe the citation could be dialed back a bit (down to 10 MPH over the speed limit).
The department’s reply? A dead-serious “Sir, that will make it 107 mph.”
No wink. No understanding. Just the verbal equivalent of a hall monitor who thought they just learned basic arithmetic and thinks they’re running the school.
Let’s be clear: “Raise Hell. Praise Dale” is not a threat. It’s not defiance for the sake of it. It’s cultural shorthand. It’s the same spirit that puts a 3 on the side of a car, hangs a black flag in the garage, and understands that sometimes the only proper answer to authority is a little righteous noise in the name of the Intimidator. It is the correct response when someone with a radio and a clipboard starts treating a speeding stop like a constitutional crisis.
If your comprehension of racing culture tops out at “this slogan makes me uncomfortable,” you might want to stick to writing parking tickets and leave the cultural commentary to people who actually understand what the hell they’re talking about. Fourth-grade reading level is being generous.
Racing people have always spoken a different language. We bleed asphalt and dirt. We respect the Icon who went out there and ran it wide open when the rules said back off. Dale Earnhardt didn’t become a legend by asking permission. And the fans who still carry that fire aren’t about to start now just because some department social media intern got their feelings hurt.
So no. We will not be dialing it down. We will not be offering softer, more “appropriate” answers for the comfort of people who clearly don’t get it.
Raise Hell.
Praise Dale.
And if that bothers you, maybe the problem isn’t the response.
Maybe the problem is you.
Kind Regards,
High Speed Dirt Media
